1. How do you scan sheet music into an iPad?
You do not need a scanner. The iPad has a document scanner built in:
- Open the Files app or the Notes app.
- In Files, tap the ... menu and choose Scan Documents. In Notes, tap the camera icon and choose Scan Documents.
- Hold the iPad over each page. It captures and straightens the page automatically.
- Save the result as a PDF.
Tips for clean scans
- Use bright, even light and avoid shadows from your hands.
- Lay the music flat. Press books open with a heavy book on each side.
- Scan a long piece in batches of 20 to 30 pages and save each batch. Very long single scans are where apps crash and lose work.
Many sheet music apps also have a scanner built in.
2. Download PDFs you bought
If you buy digital sheet music (Musicnotes, Sheet Music Direct and many publishers), download the PDF and save it to Files. Then open it in your sheet music app, or use Share and pick your app.
3. Get free public-domain scores from IMSLP
IMSLP (the Petrucci Music Library) has hundreds of thousands of free public-domain scores, especially classical music.
- Find the piece on IMSLP in Safari.
- Download the PDF and save it to Files.
- Open it in your sheet music app.
Some apps, such as Piascore and Newzik, can browse IMSLP from inside the app.
4. Copy sheet music from your computer
- AirDrop (Mac to iPad): right-click the PDF, choose Share, then AirDrop.
- iCloud Drive, Dropbox or Google Drive: put PDFs in a cloud folder on your computer, then open them from the Files app on the iPad.
- A USB-C drive: plug it into the iPad and copy the files in Files.
5. Save music from email or messages
Tap the PDF attachment, then the Share button, and choose your sheet music app or Save to Files.
6. Move a whole library from another app
If your music already lives in another sheet music app, the PDFs are usually easy to move: many apps show their folder in the Files app. Titles, setlists and annotations are harder and depend on the apps. See forScore alternatives and what transfers and our plan to switch from forScore.
How should you organize sheet music on an iPad?
- Name files clearly: "Composer - Title - Part.pdf" makes searching easy later.
- One piece per file when you can. Split big books into pieces, or use bookmarks if your app supports them.
- Use tags or collections for genre, season or ensemble.
- Back up. Keep a copy of your PDFs in iCloud Drive or on a computer, separate from your sheet music app.
