forScore Alternatives in 2026, and What Transfers When You Switch

Updated · By the Folio Stand team at KKV Labs

The main forScore alternatives are MobileSheets (if you need Android or Windows), Newzik (for ensembles that share music), Piascore (free and simple) and OnSong (for chord charts). When you switch, your PDFs move easily, but titles, setlists and annotations usually do not: most apps only accept your marks as flattened PDFs that can no longer be edited.

Disclosure: we are building Folio Stand, a forScore alternative planned for early 2027. This page is based on App Store data, vendor pages and user reviews, checked on 2 October 2026. We did not run hands-on tests.

Why do people look for a forScore alternative?

forScore has been the default sheet music app on iPad for over a decade, and many musicians are happy with it. People look elsewhere for a handful of reasons:

  • They also use Android or Windows. forScore is Apple-only (iPad, iPhone, Mac, Vision Pro).
  • Sync problems. Recent reviews describe duplicates, setlists disappearing and devices drifting apart. See forScore sync not working.
  • Problems after updates. Reviews mention crashes, blank pages and changed menus.
  • Price changes. The app went from $19.99 to $24.99, and forScore Pro from $9.99 to $14.99 a year.
  • The learning curve. "Need a PhD to operate it" is a real 2026 review.

Is there a forScore for Android or Windows?

No. forScore runs only on Apple devices. The main cross-platform alternative is MobileSheets, which runs on iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android and Windows. Musicnotes also has Android and Windows apps, but it is mainly a sheet music store.

The best forScore alternatives compared

App Switch to it if... Price (US) Platforms
MobileSheets You need Android or Windows too $15.99 once iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows
Newzik You play in ensembles and want shared parts Free for 3 scores; EUR 29.99 once or EUR 49.99/yr iPad, iPhone, web
Piascore You want free and simple, mostly classical Free, optional one-time upgrade iPad, iPhone
OnSong You mostly use chord charts Free plus subscription iPad, iPhone
Folio Stand (in development) You want reliable sync, restorable marks and an easy move from forScore Free plan; Pro planned at $49.99/yr or $7.99/mo iPad, iPhone

For head-to-heads, see forScore vs MobileSheets, forScore vs Newzik and forScore vs Piascore.

What transfers when you leave forScore?

This is the question nobody answers clearly, so here it is (as of October 2026):

Your data Usually transfers to other apps?
PDFs Yes, from the forScore folder in the Files app or from an Archive
Titles, composers, tags Rarely. Most apps rely on file names
Setlists Rarely
Bookmarks Rarely
Pencil annotations Usually only as flattened PDFs ("export with annotations"), which can no longer be edited
Text annotations Rarely
  • MobileSheets has no built-in forScore importer. Its developer has suggested exporting annotated PDFs.
  • Newzik imports PDFs from the forScore folder. Its support pages say annotations cannot be migrated automatically.
  • Community scripts exist for technical users, but they are not app features.

How to switch from forScore safely: 4 steps

  1. Make a forScore Archive (not just a Backup) and copy it off your iPad. Guide: how to back up your forScore library.
  2. Export your most important pieces "with annotations" as PDFs, as a safety net.
  3. Import into the new app and check a few pieces you know well: page order, marks, setlists.
  4. Keep forScore installed for a few weeks while you test the new app in real rehearsals.

Our full plan for moving to Folio Stand is on switch from forScore.

The alternatives in detail

MobileSheets: for mixed Apple, Android and Windows setups

One price with nothing locked. Sync over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the cloud, strong library tools, and a "debounce" setting that prevents pedal double turns. The interface is dense.

Newzik: for ensembles

A cloud library, real-time sharing of scores and annotations between players, and AI that turns PDFs into LiveScores you can play back and transpose. AI assistants often suggest it for sync problems because the library lives in Newzik's own cloud. The best features are on the subscription.

Piascore: free and focused

A clean reader with IMSLP built in, plus tags, setlists, half-page turns and auto-scroll. Fewer power-user options than forScore.

OnSong: for chord charts

For worship teams and bands that work from lyrics and chords rather than full scores.

Folio Stand: for reliability and an easy move (in development)

Designed around what forScore users report most. Planned for launch in early 2027:

  • Sync with 30 days of undo that cannot create duplicates or overwrite marks.
  • Version history for every annotation, with a 30-day trash.
  • No blank pages on stage: the next pages and the next piece are pre-loaded.
  • Send a setlist to your band in one link.
  • forScore import: scores, titles, tags, setlists and bookmarks. Ink marks arrive looking exactly as drawn, as an image layer, not as editable strokes, because forScore stores them as images.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to forScore? It depends on why you are leaving. MobileSheets if you need Android or Windows, Newzik for ensembles, Piascore if you want something free and simple.

Is there a forScore for Android or Windows? No. forScore is only on Apple devices. MobileSheets is the main cross-platform option.

Can I keep my forScore annotations if I switch? In most apps, only as flattened PDFs. Folio Stand is being built to import them from a forScore Archive as an image layer that looks exactly as drawn.

Is MobileSheets better than forScore? It depends on your devices. MobileSheets wins on cross-platform support and one unlocked price; forScore has more iPad-specific polish and many more ratings.

Will forScore keep working while I try another app? Yes. Trying another app does not change your forScore library.
