Is forScore Worth It in 2026? Price, Pro and Honest Trade-offs
For most musicians who read PDF sheet music on one iPad, yes: forScore costs $24.99 once, has no ads, covers up to 10 of your devices and has 4.8 stars from about 43,200 US ratings. forScore Pro, an optional $14.99 a year, adds extras most people can skip. Think twice if you rely on syncing several devices or dislike learning a dense interface: those are the most common complaints in 2026 reviews.
Disclosure: we make Folio Stand, a sheet music reader planned for October 2026 and not yet on the App Store. This page is based on forScore's own pages, the US App Store listing and US App Store reviews, checked on 7 October 2026. We did not run hands-on tests.
How much does forScore cost?
| Item | Price (US) | Type |
|---|---|---|
| forScore app | $24.99 | One-time purchase |
| forScore Pro | From $14.99 a year | Optional auto-renewing subscription |
| forScore Pro 30-Day Pass | $2.99 | 30 days of Pro, does not renew |
- One purchase, every Apple device. forScore is a Universal Purchase: buy it once and use it on up to 10 of your own devices, across iPad, iPhone, Mac and Apple Vision Pro.
- Free updates. forScore's How to Buy page describes the one-time price as including free updates for life.
- Family Sharing. The App Store listing shows that forScore supports Family Sharing.
- Price history. The app was $19.99 and Pro $9.99 a year in mid-2024. forScore lists $24.99 and $14.99 "as of February 2025."
Is forScore free?
No. There is no free version and no free trial of the main app. You pay $24.99 before you can use it. forScore's "before you buy" pages suggest trying it on demo iPads in some stores, or joining its beta when one is open. The 30-day Pro pass is a low-cost way to try the Pro extras, but it does not unlock the app itself.
If you want to try a free reader first, Piascore is free with an optional upgrade, and Apple's Files app can open PDFs. See the best sheet music apps for iPad.
What does forScore Pro add, and is it worth it?
forScore says Pro is optional, not needed for normal use, and not a paywall for all new features. Its Pro page lists these benefits:
- Personal customer support
- Face gestures to turn pages (head turns, winks, mouth movements)
- Pop-up menus for quick shortcuts
- Copy and paste of page content
- Settings profiles for different users
- About 400 extra stamps
- Time-limited sharing of files
- Custom metadata icons
- Extra Apple Pencil gestures (hover, pinch, swipe, tap)
- Extra app icons
forScore also says Pro benefits can change without notice.
Who should get Pro: players who want face-gesture page turns instead of a pedal, heavy stamp users, and people who want direct support. Who can skip it: most players. The core reader, library, annotation, setlists and half-page turns are in the $24.99 app.
What do forScore users love?
We read the 124 written US App Store reviews dated 1 January to 3 October 2026. Fifty-one gave four or five stars. The praise repeats:
- Organizing big libraries. Reviewers describe libraries of 1,000 to 2,000+ pieces split by band, choir and church.
- Annotation with layers, for example separate layers for each hand on piano.
- Setlists for gigs and Sunday services.
- Built-in tools: metronome, tuner, piano keyboard and audio playback.
- Half-page turns, so you see the end of one page and the start of the next.
- Long-term value. Several users have relied on it for 10 to 15 years.
Across all 43,200 ratings, the average is 4.8 stars. Unhappy users are more likely to write a review than happy ones, so the written reviews are more negative than the overall rating.
What are the common complaints?
Fifty-two of the 124 reviews from 2026 gave one or two stars. The same themes come up again and again:
| Complaint | About how many 2026 reviews mention it | What reviewers describe |
|---|---|---|
| Updates and interface changes | 27 | Menus moved, setlist steps changed, slower pages after an update |
| Sync between devices | 19 | Setlists erased, duplicate scores, devices that stop syncing |
| Annotations | 10 | Marks that vanish or lag, Pencil stutter |
| Learning curve | 9 | Hard to find basic functions without help |
| Crashes | 6 | Crashes on iPad and on Mac after OS updates |
These counts are keyword matches, so treat them as a rough guide. A few reviews also mention slow support replies, and a few object to paying for Pro on top of a paid app.
To be fair: some issues get fixed. One April 2026 reviewer wrote that sync had been fixed, and another said a search bug was fixed in January 2026. forScore ships updates often; version 15.2.3 came out on 29 September 2026.
If sync is your problem today, see forScore sync not working and how to back up your forScore library.
How does forScore's cost compare over 3 years?
forScore's one-time price makes it cheap over time. Subscription apps cost more, but some include cloud sync or sharing you would otherwise pay for elsewhere.
| App | Year 1 | 3-year total | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|---|
| forScore (no Pro) | $24.99 | $24.99 | One-time |
| forScore + Pro every year | $39.98 | $69.96 | One-time + yearly |
| MobileSheets | $15.99 | $15.99 | One-time |
| Piascore + full upgrade | $5.99 | $5.99 | Free app, one-time upgrade |
| Newzik Premium | EUR 49.99 | EUR 149.97 | Yearly subscription |
| OnSong Premium | about $60 | about $180 | Yearly subscription |
| Folio Stand Pro (planned) | $49.99 | $149.97 | Yearly subscription, or free plan for 15 scores |
US App Store prices, except Newzik (newzik.com). Taxes are extra and prices can change. Over three years, forScore without Pro is one of the cheapest serious readers. Folio Stand Pro would cost more than forScore over three years; the case for it is reliability features, not price.
Who should buy forScore?
- Solo players on one iPad who want the deepest feature set for a one-time price.
- Classical and church keyboard players with large libraries and many setlists.
- Apple-only users who want the same app on iPad, iPhone and Mac.
- People who like to customize their tools and do not mind a learning curve.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Anyone who needs Android or Windows: forScore is Apple-only. MobileSheets runs on both.
- Ensembles that share parts and marks: Newzik is built around shared projects.
- Musicians who depend on syncing several devices and have been hurt by it before. Read recent reviews first.
- Beginners who want something simple and free: try Piascore.

Where does Folio Stand fit?
Folio Stand is in development, with launch planned for October 2026. It is being built around the complaints above:
- Sync with 30-day Undo Sync, designed so it cannot create duplicates or overwrite your marks.
- Versioned marks with Restore Marks, so a vanished annotation can be brought back.
- Stage Mode, free, with half-page turns and pedal key learning.
- Import from a forScore backup, with titles, setlists and bookmarks. See switch from forScore.
- Automatic backups and full export, so your library is never locked in.
It costs more than forScore over time and has no one-time option. If forScore works well for you, there is no need to switch.
