Planning Center Music Stand Alternatives for Worship Teams (2026)

Updated · By the Folio Stand team at KKV Labs

Planning Center Music Stand is a music reader app that shows the charts from your church's Planning Center Services plans. It costs $2 to $10 a month per church on top of a Services plan, and it cannot be bought on its own. If your church already plans services in Planning Center, it is usually the right choice; if not, Charts by WorshipTools (free for teams of up to 10), OnSong (chord charts) and forScore (full scores for pianists and organists) are the main alternatives.

Disclosure: we make Folio Stand, a sheet music reader planned for October 2026 and not yet on the App Store. This page is based on vendor pages, US App Store listings and recent user reviews, checked on 7 October 2026. We did not run hands-on tests.

What is Planning Center Music Stand?

Music Stand is an add-on to Planning Center Services, the worship planning and scheduling tool many churches use. A musician logs in, opens a plan from their schedule, and sees the PDF chart for each song in service order.

According to its App Store listing, Music Stand can:

  • Turn pages with a Bluetooth foot pedal, a swipe, a tap on the page edge or a MIDI device.
  • Save highlighter, pen and text notes online for each person, and show or merge other people's notes.
  • Play the audio attached to each song, with looping.
  • Change the metronome tempo as you move to the next song.
  • Let one device turn the pages for other connected devices ("Sessions").
  • Work offline for the last 10 plans you viewed. Notes taken offline sync when you reconnect.
  • Let editors reorder, add or delete items in the plan.

It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android. Planning Center says it does not run on Windows. Charts and audio can come from MultiTracks, SongSelect or PraiseCharts.

How much does Planning Center Music Stand cost?

Music Stand is priced per church, not per musician. Once it is turned on, every team member on the Services plan can use it. You need an active Services subscription first.

Services plan (team members) Services price Music Stand add-on
Up to 5 Free $5/month
Up to 20 $15/month $2/month
Up to 50 $32/month $5/month
Up to 150 $69/month $10/month
400, 1,000 or unlimited $115, $179 or $239/month Shown in your Planning Center account

Prices are from planningcenter.com on 7 October 2026. Planning Center's pages mention a free trial, but they did not state its length.

How does Music Stand fit with Planning Center Services?

Services is where the worship leader builds the plan: songs, keys, arrangements, attachments and who is playing. Music Stand is the reading view of that plan. The benefit is that nobody has to send files around: when the leader adds a song or changes the order, the plan updates for the whole team.

The free Planning Center Services app also lets musicians open attachments and use the media player. For a team that only needs to glance at a PDF, that can be enough. Music Stand adds the stage features: pedals, notes on the chart, Sessions and the metronome.

What do worship teams like about Music Stand?

  • One source of truth. The chart, the key and the order come straight from the plan, so the team plays from the same version.
  • One price for the whole team. No volunteer has to buy an app or a subscription.
  • Personal notes. Each musician's marks are saved to their own account and do not change anyone else's chart.
  • Practice tools. Rehearsal audio with loops and a metronome that follows the set.
  • Hands-free turns. Pedals, MIDI and a leader-controlled Session.

A recent five-star review calls it the easiest way to see your charts if your church uses Planning Center. That sums up its appeal.

What do worship teams dislike about it?

The iPhone and iPad app has 3.5 stars from 324 US ratings (version 4.8.3, released 1 October 2026). We read the 21 written US reviews from June 2025 to August 2026. Thirteen of them gave one or two stars. The repeated themes:

  • Annotation tool changes. Several reviews from January to May 2026 say an update removed the eraser, pen types or thickness options, and one says earlier marks were lost.
  • Notes not saving when the leader changes the chart while a musician is writing on it.
  • Slow page loads and crashes on stage, with musicians keeping paper copies as a backup.
  • Offline limits. Only the last 10 viewed plans are kept offline, so an older plan may need a connection.
  • Login trouble, including repeated password resets and confusion when one person serves at more than one church.
  • No way to try or buy it alone. One reviewer wanted a trial before paying; the add-on needs a church Services account.

An independent review on learnofchrist.com (August 2026) reaches a similar view: strong for churches already on Services, but test it in rehearsal and keep a backup plan.

Should your church stay on Planning Center Music Stand?

Stay if most of these are true:

  • Your church already plans every service in Planning Center Services.
  • Your team plays mostly from chord charts and lead sheets attached to the plan.
  • You want one bill for the whole team and no app purchases for volunteers.
  • Your leader makes changes during the week and needs them to reach everyone.

Look at an alternative if:

  • Your church does not use Services, or is leaving it.
  • Your pianist or organist reads long full scores, hymnals and anthems, and needs deep library and annotation tools.
  • Musicians play for more than one church or band and want one personal library.
  • You need Windows support (Music Stand has none).

Many churches do both: Services and Music Stand for the band, and a dedicated sheet music app for the keyboard player.

Charts by WorshipTools: the free all-in-one option

WorshipTools says Charts is free for teams of 10 or fewer, with paid plans as the team grows. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web. You can bring your own PDFs and ChordPro files or add licensed charts from SongSelect, change keys in one tap, mark up charts, and share set lists. Set lists sync with WorshipTools' own Planning and Presenter apps, not with Planning Center. It has 4.8 stars from 1,612 US ratings. It suits a small church that wants planning, charts and lyrics projection from one free system.

OnSong: for chord charts and worship leaders

OnSong is built around text chord charts that you can transpose, plus PDFs. Its App Store listing names Planning Center, SongSelect, Dropbox and Google Drive as import sources. Some features need a subscription: Premium is $5.99 a month or just under $60 a year on the US App Store, and a cheaper Essentials tier also exists. Each musician who wants the paid features pays for their own plan. It has 4.5 stars from 5,603 US ratings.

forScore: for keyboard players with big libraries

forScore is a one-time $24.99 purchase with very deep tools: layers, setlists, links for repeats, half-page turns, and a built-in metronome and tuner. It is not connected to any church planning system, so each person keeps their own library. Many church pianists use it next to Planning Center. See is forScore worth it?.

MobileSheets: if your team uses Android or Windows

MobileSheets is $15.99 once on the App Store and also runs on Android and Windows. It is a good fit for mixed-device teams. It is not linked to Planning Center.

Folio Stand: one link for the whole set (planned)

Folio Stand is in development, with launch planned for October 2026. It does not connect to Planning Center. What it is being built to do for worship teams:

  • Send to Band: send Sunday's setlist and its PDFs in one link, with no limit on bandmates. Receiving is free.
  • Stage Mode is free: no toolbars or stray ink during the service.
  • Pedals: any Bluetooth pedal, and the app can learn whichever key your pedal sends.
  • Restore Marks: every annotation is versioned, so an erased mark can be brought back.
  • Half-page turns and placeholders in setlists for readings and the sermon.

How do you switch a worship team away from Music Stand?

  1. Download your charts. Save the PDFs and chord charts from your Services song library before you cancel anything.
  2. Pick one app for the band and, if needed, a second app for the keyboard player.
  3. Run both for a month. Keep Music Stand on while the team tries the new app in rehearsal, not on Sunday.
  4. Test pedals and offline use on every device the team uses.
  5. Keep a printed set for the first few Sundays.

For pedal setup, see page turner pedals for iPad. For a full church setup, see sheet music on iPad for church musicians.
