forScore vs Newzik (2026): Solo Library or Shared Ensemble App?

Updated · By the Folio Stand team at KKV Labs

Choose forScore if you are a solo performer who wants a deep, local library on iPad, iPhone and Mac for one price ($24.99). Choose Newzik if you play in an ensemble that shares parts and markings, or want AI that turns PDFs into playable, transposable scores. Newzik's best features need a subscription (EUR 49.99 a year).

How we compared: this page is based on each app's US App Store listing and website, and on user reviews and published reviews, checked on 2 October 2026. We did not run hands-on tests. Disclosure: we make Folio Stand, a sheet music reader in development.

What is the main difference?

forScore is a personal library: deep organization, layers, links, Reflow and a Mac app. Newzik is built around groups: a cloud library, sharing between players, and AI tools. Newzik's App Store page says it is used by more than 400,000 people.

Is Newzik better for ensembles?

For groups that share music, yes. Newzik lets a conductor, teacher or section leader send scores and annotations to players in real time, so everyone stays up to date. forScore can share scores and setlists, but it is designed around one musician's library. See Send to Band for how Folio Stand plans to handle setlist sharing.

How good are Newzik's AI LiveScores?

Newzik turns PDFs and scans into LiveScores you can listen to, transpose and export to MusicXML. Scoring Notes found its AI does a very good job with simpler scores but can trip on complex ones. Check the result before relying on a transposed part in rehearsal. The free trial includes 10 pages of LiveScore conversion.

Which is better offline?

forScore keeps your library on your devices, so it works with no connection. Newzik stores your library in its cloud so you can open it on any device, and you need a Newzik account. If you perform in places with no signal, test offline use in Newzik before a concert.

Can you move from forScore to Newzik?

Newzik can import PDFs from the forScore folder in the Files app. Its support pages say annotations cannot be migrated automatically, and setlists and metadata are not covered. See what transfers when you leave forScore.

Where does Folio Stand fit?

Folio Stand is our app, planned for early 2027 for iPad and iPhone. Like forScore, your library stays on your devices and in your own iCloud, with no account. Like Newzik, it lets a leader share music: Send to Band sends a setlist with its PDFs in one link. It does not convert scores with AI. Its focus is sync that cannot lose your music and marks you can always restore.
