forScore vs Piascore (2026): Paid Power or Free and Simple?

Updated · By the Folio Stand team at KKV Labs

Choose Piascore if you want a free, simple sheet music reader with the IMSLP public-domain library built in; it suits students, classical players and first-time tablet users. Choose forScore ($24.99 once) if you are a performer with a large library who wants layers, links, Reflow, a Mac app and deeper organization.

How we compared: this page is based on each app's US App Store listing and website, and on user reviews, checked on 2 October 2026. We did not run hands-on tests. Disclosure: we make Folio Stand, a sheet music reader in development.

Is Piascore really free?

Yes, Piascore is a free download that reads PDFs and includes IMSLP browsing. An optional one-time upgrade unlocks more features. Piascore's App Store page says more than 7 million musicians use it.

Why pay for forScore?

forScore is built for musicians with large libraries and busy performance schedules. You get richer metadata and search, annotation layers you can show or hide, Reflow for small screens, linked audio, a Mac app and sync across up to 10 Apple devices. It has 43,155 US App Store ratings, averaging 4.8.

Recent forScore reviews are more critical than its all-time rating, mostly about sync, the learning curve and changes after updates. See forScore sync not working.

Which is better for students and piano teachers?

For a student starting out, Piascore is hard to beat on price, and IMSLP covers most classical teaching repertoire. Teachers who manage many students' pieces, or who want layers for teacher and student marks, often prefer forScore. See sheet music on iPad for piano teachers and students.

Can you move from Piascore to forScore, or back?

Both read PDFs, so your music files move easily through the Files app. Annotations, tags and setlists generally stay behind, or come across only as flattened PDFs exported with marks.
